Curriculum Models for Primary Languages
Welcome to the curriculum models for primary languages web pages, designed for school leaders, curriculum co-ordinators, and LAs supporting schools, who are seeking to ensure primary languages are included as part of a coherent KS2 curriculum.
The site has two main sections:
Starting Out, for those about to introduce languages and Moving On, for those who are seeking to explore alternative ways of organising languages in the curriculum.
The important areas for consideration are:
- Ensuring progression for all pupils – within KS2 and into KS3
- Planning to integrate primary languages in a way that complements and links with other aspects of the primary curriculum
- Developing intercultural understanding and community cohesion
- Ensuring high quality teaching & learning and sustainability
Explore this website to see advantages of successful models, discover potential pitfalls and how they have been avoided or overcome by schools in our case study section.
Main sources of reference and support
Much national support is available through CILT, the National Centre for Languages. Information about this is available on the primary languages website www.primarylanguages.org.uk
This site gives direct access to the Key Stage 2 framework for languages which outlines
- The five strands – Oracy, Literacy, Language Learning Skills, Knowledge about Language and Intercultural Understanding
- What pupils should learn by the end of each year in KS2 and
- Provides supporting documentation
The QCDA schemes of work are also available for reference from this site.
The CILT primary languages training zone provides online training and ideas for anyone interested in primary languages.
For more information on all these areas, plus other documentation such as research, please see The National Context: Further reading.
